ISLES’ BARZAL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

After an explosive first season, Islanders center Mathew Barzal was awarded the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year. The 21-year-old had 22 goals and 63 assists. His 85 points are the third most in a season by a rookie in the last 25 years behind Alex Ovechkin (106) and Sidney Crosby (102), according to ESPN Stats & Info. Barzal is also one of only three Islanders to record 80 points in a rookie season, joining Hall of Famers Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier. He’s just the fifth Islander to be awarded the Calder Trophy.
