Victims identified in fatal Baltimore County crash overnight

UPDATED:

Two people died after a car crashed into their disabled vehicle on the JFX early Sunday morning.

Gary G. Boyd Jr., 37, of Baltimore and Renee D. Harrell, 25, of Belcamp had been riding in a 2009 Toyota Camry on I-83 in Baltimore County when it crashed near Ruxton Road, according Maryland State Police.

Both got out of the car — which was perpendicular facing the fast lane — and were standing close to it on the roadway when another driver crashed into it, hitting them both. Boyd fell into the stream below.

Police said a trooper on patrol found the accident scene at about 1:15 a.m.

The deaths add to the growing list of I-83 fatalities in Maryland this year. In February, a 26-year-old Towson man died after his car hit the guardrail around the same location as Sunday’s accident.

Police said the driver of the other car refused medical treatment at the scene.

He had not been charged in the crash as of Monday.

A spokesman for Maryland State Police said it was unclear when the driver would be charged — state police initially said he was facing charges — but police were awaiting the results of an investigation into the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and police will pass along their findings to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review regarding possible charges against the driver.

Northbound traffic on I-83 was shut down until around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. In addition to State Police, Baltimore County fire and rescue personnel, the Baltimore Police Department, Baltimore County Police and MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel all responded to the scene.
