Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, Jan. 12.

Girls basketball

Chesapeake-AA 44, Crofton 43: With the Cougars down one in the final seconds, Maggie Lawrence came up with a steal and was fouled while launching a half-court shot. She hit her first two free throws to give Cheapeake the win. Lawrence finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Ava Arruda led the win with 10 points. Kasey Slade finished with eight points, nine rebounds, seven steals and four blocks. Vanessa Carmichael had a game-high 22 points for Crofton.

South River 54, Old Mill 21: Skylar Woodyard had an all-around strong night with 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. Karlee Hawkins added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Meade 55, Arundel 32: Naomi Williams scored 18 points to lead the visiting Mustangs over the Wildcats. Meade opened with a 12-4 run in the first quarter.

Broadneck 58, Glen Burnie 32: The host Bruins opened with a 19-0 run and beat the Gophers. Samantha Miller scored a game-high 17 points for Broadneck. Other top scorers for the Bruins were London Best (15 points) and Mackenzie Wharton (10 points).

Southern 70, Northeast 30: Huntyr Marks led all scorers with 23 points and Ava Wooster had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host Bulldogs over the Eagles. Kamaria Brown had eight points for Northeast. Tuesday, Southern will host North County and Northeast will travel to South River.

Havre de Grace 45, Joppatowne 19: Junior Savannah Lawrence shot a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc, leading the Warriors with 16 points. Natalie Burton added nine points with three assists. Azareya Whiting finished with eight points, six steals and three assists.

John Carroll 45, Maryvale Prep 33: Sophomore Pieper McCue led the way for the Patriots with 19 points commanding a strong press break. Senior Emma Bison chipped in nine.

Patterson Mill 54, Urbana 41: A 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from Kiley Wilhelm paced the shorthanded Huskies. Rylie Madsen piled on 15 and six. Sophia Trinh had seven and seven in the win.

Hereford 66, Dundalk 11: The Bulls raced out to a 25-1 lead after one quarter. Gabby Nieberlein scored 10 of her 12 points in the opening frame. Lauren Kraft finished with a game-high 19 points.

Pikesville 65, Chesapeake-BC 30: Darielle Weems scored 15 points and freshman  KA’nai Pyatt had 10 points to lead the visiting Panthers over the Bayhawks. Pyatt also had five assists, three rebounds and two steals in the win.

Long Reach 43, Marriotts Ridge 30: For Long Reach, Sydney Nance had 14 points, while Makaylah Liverpool had 13. In the loss, the Mustangs were led by Lamees Bazzi with 11 points. Katie Leader chipped in seven.

Westminster 43, Century 37: Harli Hamlett scored 24 points and Raegan Edwards had five points, but the visiting Knights (6-5) fell to the Owls.

Catoctin 40, South Carroll 32: The Cavaliers fell short against undefeated Catoctin. Kendall Curtin had five assists and four steals for the Cavaliers.

Gerstell 58, Garrison Forest 37: Taylor Moran scored 11 points and Annie Jackson had 10 points to lead the host Falcons (7-5, 3-0 IAAM B Conference) over the Grizzlies (1-6, 0-5). Gerstell travels to John Carroll on Wednesday.

Reservoir 51, Wilde Lake 28: The Gators (7-3) snapped a two-game losing streak as Gabi Burian led the way with 14 points. Leah Lauer chipped in nine points, while Jasmin Shelton had eight. For Wilde Lake (0-10), Jordyn Bennett had 11 points.

Mt. Hebron 40, Atholton 37: Michelle Nzelibe had 10 points for Mt. Hebron (6-5, 4-4 Howard County) in the win as the Vikings move back over .500. Pearl Prasartkarnka added eight points, while Jaelyn Peters added seven.

Howard 47, Glenelg 32: The Lions (8-3, 7-1 Howard County) bounced back from their first county loss of the season led by 13-point performances from Alana Harrison and Oluwadamilola Daniel. For Glenelg (3-8, 2-6), Maria Garbis had nine points, while Reese Holden added eight.

Hammond 52, Centennial 18: The Golden Bears (12-0, 8-0 Howard County) continued to roll as Nia Green scored a team-high 22 points and added five assists. Asia Mitchell had 10 points while Sara Yarnell added nine. For Centennial (5-6, 3-5), Adria Welsh had 13 points.

McDonogh 81, St. Mary’s 62: McDonogh led by just two at the half but raced away in the second. Kennedy Umeh led with 39 points. For St. Mary’s, Baily Walden led with 22 points. Alexandre Vandiver added 19 and Bailey Harris had 17.

Indian Creek 76, Chaplegate Christian 31: The host Eagles (11-4, 7-0 IAAM C Conference) took a 44-10 lead in the first half and beat the Yellow Jackets (3-12, 1-9). Indian Creek was led by Stephanie Bunker with 30 points, Abbie Bunker with 15 points, and Malinda Morgan with 13 points.

Boys basketball

Fallston 78, Rising Sun 38: Max Rueckert led all scorers with 30 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Oliver Rueckert, Brody Fitzkee and Oliver Schamburg contributed 10 points each with Fitzkee handing out five assists. Ten different Cougars scored in the win.

Joppatowne 90, North Harford 33: The visiting Mariners built a 50-15 lead in the first half and beat the Hawks. Joppatowne was led by Kendall Pollock and Phil Clark each with 13 points and Dartanun Blakney and Kendrick Williams each with 10 points. Kishann Smith pulled in seven rebounds and Damian Brooks collected six steals.

Patterson Mill 56, Edgewood 37: The visiting Huskies used an 18-7 run in the third quarter to pull away from the Rams. Patterson Mill was led by Colin Luddy and James Kropp with 13 points each and Kai Gibson and James Hammond with 10 points each.

C. Milton Wright 59, Elkton 54: The Mustangs got the job done in overtime behind 21 points and 15 rebounds from Dylan Sander.

Westminster 38, Century 36: Micah Ozgar scored 20 points, including a pair of clutch free throws in the final minute to lift the Owls over the Knights. Westminster’s defense the final 10 seconds prevented Century from getting a good look at a tying or winning shot. Ozgar also had six rebounds and three assists. Jah Donald was a force inside with nine rebounds and five blocks. Jackson Smith led the way for Century with 13 points.

South Carroll 75, Catoctin 69: The Cavaliers improved to 6-3 led by a balanced offense. Pieter Borghans led the win with 22 points. Right on his heels was Ian Straley with 21. Micah Puckett chipped in 15 points.

Parkville 64, Milford Mill 46: Gregory Lewis scored a game-high 19 points, but the host Millers fell to the Knights. Parkville was led by Cam Alexander and Kyliek Howard each with 16 points, Mikko Persia with 11 points and Anthony Council with 10 points.

McDonogh 58, Boys’ Latin 55: Jeff Exinor scored a game-high 30 points to lead the visiting Eagles (9-4, 3-3 MIAA A Conference) over the Lakers. (2-11, 0-7) C.J. Jackson scored 15 points for Boys’ Latin. McDonogh broke a 26-26 tie by outsourcing Boys’ Latin, 18-15, in the third quarter. On Wednesday, the Eagles host John Carroll and the Lakers host Broadneck.

Mount Carmel 68, Calvert Hall 56: The host Cougars (14-6, 5-1 MIAA A Conference Red Division) beat the Cardinals (8-11, 3-3) and remain division leaders.  Both teams host Archbishop Spalding next.  Calvert Hall on Saturday and Mount Carmel on Monday.

Glenelg Country 63, Mount St. Joseph 62, OT: The visiting Gaels (18-2, 5-1 MIAA A Conference Black Division) fell to the Dragons (7-9, 4-2) in overtime. It was the second straight loss after falling, 64-59, to St. Frances on Monday.  Glenelg Country will play at the Showcase Classic Saturday and Sunday.  Mount St. Joseph will travel to St. Vincent Pallotti on Tuesday.

Broadneck 62, Glen Burnie 57: The host Bruins went on a 35-13 run in the fourth quarter to win. In the fourth quarter, Broadneck’s Jordan Brown scored 13 of his 19 points and Drew Cahall scored 10 of his 13 points.

Severn 78, St. Paul’s 61: Corey Dixon scored 17 points and Sean Harvey and Kingston Price each scored 16 points to lead the Admirals (11-5) over the host Crusaders (9-6).

Arundel 69, Meade 67: Samson Anjorin scored the game-winning putback with less than eight seconds to play to beat the Mustangs (7-3). The Wildcats improve to 9-0. Meade freshman Keon Scott scored 21 points, including the game-tying field goal with eight seconds left to play.

Crofton 62, Chesapeake 27: Will Frost unloaded 25 points to lead the Cardinals, followed by Dylan Shafer and Miles Denton, who each netted eight.

Howard 63, Glenelg 49: Alex Reeb had 19 points to lead the Lions (7-5, 4-4 Howard County) in the win, including seven in the fourth quarter. Griffin Garner added 15 points as Howard built a nine-point halftime lead. For Glenelg (3-8, 2-6), Will Piwowarski had 15 points, Ty Jenkins added 12 and Paul Piwowarski chipped in 11.

Centennial 70, Hammond 60: The Eagles (6-3, 5-3 Howard County) won their second game in a row with a trio of double-digit scorers. Adrien Nyom led the way with 16 points, while Josh Frazier added 15. Charlie Crabtree also scored 13 points. For Hammond (4-7, 3-5), Justin Christian had 16 points.

Atholton 71, Mt. Hebron 47: The Raiders (5-5, 4-4 Howard County) won their third game in a row. Amir Shaheed spearheaded the offense with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Deion Dent chipped in 11 points. For Mt. Hebron (7-3, 4-3), Julian Kelly had 12 points.

River Hill 77, Oakland Mills 46: The Hawks (12-1, 8-0 Howard County) remained undefeated in county with four double-digit scorers. Soma Unegbu led the way with 21 points, while Braden Sauritch added 16. Nicholas Kogut scored 12, while Aiden Igwebe chipped in 10. For Oakland Mills (2-8, 1-6), Nick Smith had 15 points.

Chapelgate Christian 64, St. Mary’s 57: Riley Costello had 23 points in the loss in which the Saints led at halftime. Jovanni Hall added 14 points while Noah Cerny had 11.

Boys swimming

Severn 128, Pallotti 41: Harlen Erskine (50 free, 100 free) and Court Barrett (500 free, 100 back stroke) were double-winners for the Admirals to help lead the dominant victory. Other individual winners include: Rhett Walker (100 breast stroke), Nat Patty (100 fly) and Cal Olenec (200 free). Severn also swept the three relays.

Girls swimming

Severn 65, Pallotti 28/Mercy 61, Severn 32: In the split, Aliza Monaldo captured the 200 and 500 frees while leading off the victorious 400 free relay that included Whitney Grimes, Abigail DiPaola and Kenzie Getz as well. Getz claimed the 50 free and 100 free individually.
