UPDATED:

Archbishop Spalding is attempting a takeover of College Park.

A little over 24 hours after Cavaliers quarterback Malik Washington and cornerback Jayden Shipps jointly announced their commitments to the University of Maryland last week, defensive end Delmar White announced the same choice on Instagram.

White, who transferred from Chesapeake to Spalding between his sophomore and junior seasons, flew under the radar, per Spalding head coach Kyle Schmitt. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound rising senior is regarded as a three-star defensive lineman by 247Sports. He fielded offers from Villanova, Monmouth, Bryant and Massachusetts before choosing to play football for the Terps.

Last fall, White tallied 57 total tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss as well as 5.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. He was named Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A All-Conference and Capital Gazette 2023 second team.

In the winter, he earned The Capital Gazette Wrestler of the Year honors, ranked top heavyweight in the state.

“Everyone who saw him in person and worked with him really liked him, but it’s the product of groupthink by college coaches who didn’t have info on him transferring from Chesapeake. He only got to Spalding last summer,” Schmitt said. “And a bunch of guys not trusting their eyes, mostly trusting the internet and Twitter as opposed to, this guy’s a freaky athlete who’s a great wrestler, is tough and is really low maintenance.”

A few weeks back, White attended a camp at Maryland and stirred up an immediate and impactful relationship with defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Brian Williams.

In White, Maryland will receive a powerfully strong athlete with brute strength capable of causing havoc in the backfield, said Schmitt, who informed coach Mike Locksley and his staff they’d be gaining someone who can excel at the Power Four level.

“Maryland needs more big guys like Delmar. I don’t think we can take too much credit for Delmar’s strength. That’s really his own work,” Schmitt said. “I give full credit to Chesapeake for working with him for two years, and we spent time with him in the summer to hone his craft. That’s what he needed — practice against guys who have a shot at blocking him. But to get here, so much of this goes to him and his hard work.”

The three recent commits are expected to join four other Spalding products currently on the Maryland roster in fall of 2025. That number could rise as the Terps have shown interest in other Cavaliers, including offering defensive back Sean Johnson.

White, already committing more to the weight room to prepare for the next step, looks forward to having a brotherhood readymade at his future team.

“It’s really good to have. When you need a friend there, they’ll always be there for you,” White said.
