Ronald Koeman has not been shy about letting his feelings be known ever since he was dismissed as Barcelona manager in late 2021, but his latest comments on president Joan Laporta might be the most explosive yet.

Speaking at an event for his foundation, the former Barça defender and coach and current Netherlands manager was asked about the Blaugrana’s chase of Nico Williams, who appears to be Barça’s number one target in the transfer market.

Instead of focusing only on Nico’s qualities, Koeman used the question as an opportunity to go after Laporta in no uncertain terms.

“I’m not inside the club to know if signing Nico is possible or not. I understand the interest because Nico is a great player, but I don’t know if they’re just rumors or if the club actually thinks they can fight for this player.

“The problem at the club in the last few years is that Messi is gone, I am gone, Xavi is gone... I believe respecting the legends of the club is better than fighting for one player. Barça should be above everything and everyone, and they haven’t done so in the last few years where they haven’t competed. And I believe that’s the fault of the board, because their way of managing isn’t good.”

Koeman also commented on new Barça manager Hansi Flick, and once again threw shade at Laporta’s direction:

“I hope Laporta is finally patient with a coach. If [Flick] doesn’t feel supported, he won’t last long.”

And finally Koeman was asked if he ever plans to return to Barça in any sort of managerial role. His answer?

“Yes, but not as coach and certainly with another president.”
