Hesperis

A floriferous member of the Brassicaceae family, with scented white, purple flowers in late spring into early summer. Will seed around in the border.

A supremely attractive plant to visiting insects, Hesperis draws in bees, butterflies and many others to its flowers; being most strongly scented in the evening, moths are also pollinators. The leaves are also the food-plant for the larvae of several moths and butterflies, most attractively that symbol of spring, the orange-tip. Not native to Britain, Dame's-violet has been cultivated here since mediaeval times and has inevitably escaped the bounds of gardens to become naturalized over almost the whole of the Britain and Ireland.
