While air mattresses have come a long way, they're not typically the most comfortable way to sleep. Luckily, there are ways to make it a more pleasant experience. Bedding materials, the size of the mattress, and other personal preferences can all factor into how comfortable this portable sleep situation can be but, beyond that, there are a few universal tips and tricks that can make all the difference.

Here are a handful of simple ways you can make your air mattress more comfortable, whether for yourself or your guests.

1. Consider What’s Important

When it comes to choosing an air mattress, there are a few factors to consider. First and foremost is durability, as a deflated air mattress is the fastest route to a terrible night’s sleep. More factors worth considering include:

  • Transportability
  • Support
  • Weight capacity
  • Inflation time
  • How loud the pump is while in operation

It’s important to keep these qualities in mind as well as determine how important each one is in your quest for finding the ideal air mattress. You might find that quiet operation comes second only to durability, or you might prefer a mattress with quick inflation over anything else. The trick is to set your priorities and start your mattress search from there.

2. Go for Good Bedding

You might think that quality bedding is only important for primary bedrooms and elegantly appointed guest suites, but it can go a long way in making your air mattress more comfortable. All of the bedding fundamentals (like thread count, material, weaves, etc.) should still play a vital role when it comes to your air mattress. While an air mattress will likely never be as comfortable as your king-size memory foam retreat, it can be made much more conducive to a great night’s sleep if you pay attention to how it’s dressed—and that starts with the sheets.

3. Layer on the Pillows and Throws

Much of what goes into creating a more comfortable air mattress depends on how you make the bed. Throw pillows and blankets can go a long way. If possible, push your air mattress up against a wall to give the pillows a bit more stability. Bolsters, Euros, and more can all help build up your bed to provide both added comfort and a more plush effect. As a final touch, add a throw blanket in case one more layer of warmth is needed throughout the night.

4. Don’t Skimp on a Duvet

You wouldn’t dream of ditching your primary bed’s duvet, so why would you skip it for your air mattress? Not only can a duvet provide an extra layer of warmth and comfort for guests, but it can also create a more permanent feel and cozy aesthetic for guests spending the night on your trusty air mattress. This detail will go a long way in creating a more serene sleep zone—even if it’s in the middle of the living room. You might even fool your guests into thinking they’re sleeping atop a permanent mattress thanks to your expert-level bed styling.

5. Add a Topper

Including a mattress topper in the mix is crucial for creating a comfortable sleeping environment—even if it is on an air mattress. Not only can it make for a softer landing, but it can also buffer firmer air pressure settings so guests feel supported. It can also make for a more breathable (read: cooler) sleep situation by allowing a bit of airflow between you and the mattress.

6. Adjust the Air Pressure

Air pressure is everything when it comes to making the most of your air mattress. Be sure to check in with guests beforehand and after they give the air mattress a test sit to see if the air pressure should be adjusted. A firmer air mattress tends to make for more comfortable sleep due to its stability, though it can be a bit unforgiving unless it’s dressed with the right topper. Keep these factors in mind and, again, be sure to touch base with your guests before you get your mattress set up to ensure it’s pre-set with their desired pressure level.

7. Use a Frame

If you or your guests are using an air mattress for an extended time, it might be worth purchasing a frame to get the air mattress off the floor. Not only does it look nicer to have an elevated mattress, but it also can keep your bed from moving or shifting throughout the night. Some air mattresses come with frames, though you can purchase a frame separately if needed.
