Halsey, Sittin’ Up There: How ‘Without Me’ Hit No. 1, On the Chart Beat Podcast

Capitol Records evp promotion Greg Marella discusses Halsey's rise. Plus, 19 No. 19 hits … for '19.

Welcome back to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what’s on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, Gary and Trevor welcome Capitol Records executive vp of promotion Greg Marella to celebrate Halsey‘s first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist: “Without Me,” which takes over atop the tally dated Jan. 12. It’s also Capitol’s first Hot 100 No. 1 since 2014.

“There’s an edge to her that she’s always had, and still has,” Marella muses of Halsey. “She is embraced by a rock audience … a hip-hop audience … a pop audience. She is an artist that doesn’t just live in a pop lane. Not every artist can do that.”

Plus, an annual tradition on the first Chart Beat Podcast of a new year, updated for this year: flashing back to 19 hits that peaked at No. 19 on the Hot 100 … for ’19. From Tony Bennett in 1962 to more recent hits by Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Lorde, several songs have reached No. 19 on the Hot 100 over the years that perhaps feel even bigger, with their legacies seemingly outperforming their original chart runs.
