State and Metro Area Employment, Hours, & Earnings

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program produces detailed industry estimates of employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls. CES State and Metro Area produces data for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions. CES National Estimates produces estimates for the nation.

Each month, CES surveys approximately 119,000 businesses and government agencies, representing 629,000 individual worksites.

In June, unemployment rates were higher in 8 states, lower in 1 state, and stable in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 8 states and was essentially unchanged in 42 states and the District.

Jobless rates were higher in May than a year earlier in 269 of the 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 83, and unchanged in 37. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 44 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1, and was essentially unchanged in 344.

Employment in State College, Pennsylvania, metro area up 11.5 percent for year ended in May 2024

From May 2023 to May 2024, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 44 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1 area, and was essentially unchanged in 344 areas. The largest percentage increase occurred in State College, Pennsylvania (+11.5 percent). The lone over-the-year decrease was in Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii, at 6.8 percent. read more »
