Chargers add Michigan TE in new 2025 mock draft

Colston Loveland makes perfect sense for the Chargers who are now headed by his former Michigan coach, Jim Harbaugh.

For the second year in a row, the Chargers chose not to address the tight end position for the long term. They did, however, add both Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst to the room which provides not one, but two seasoned veterans to help a room that’s lacked top-end and well-rounded talent for some time.

At the same time, it fits the mold of what the Chargers want to do in year one. They’re going to run the football and change the culture. Dissly and Hurst help them do that. But when it comes down to it, this is the modern NFL where the best tight ends catch a lot of passes and produce a lot of yards. Dissly and Hurst are fine in that regard, but they aren’t normally a main bullet point on team’s game plans.

Enter current Michigan Wolverine tight end Colston Loveland, next year’s consensus top prospect at his position and a very viable target for the Chargers to land depending how the 2024 season pans out.

In a recent 2025 mock draft from The 33rd Team, the Chargers were paired with Loveland who was selected with the 19th-overall pick.

“Not only is it convenient to stick Colston Loveland with former head coach Jim Harbaugh, but it addresses a massive need for the rebuilding Los Angeles Chargers offense. Loveland is the latest tight end prospect with stellar speed, soft hands, and a great change of direction for his size. He would stretch the field for Justin Herbert and the offense.”

“His blocking is the real key to lock in this draft spot, and Harbaugh already knows he can count on Loveland in the trenches.”

Loveland contributed with the Wolverines as a true freshman in 2022 with 16 receptions for 235 yards and two touchdowns in five starts. He broke out as a sophomore with 45 catches, 649 yards, and four touchdowns en route to helping Michigan win the CFP National Championship. He was also named a First-Team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and a second-team honoree by the media.

Loveland wins with excellent athleticism for his size. His speed pops on film and what will really make your eyes go wide is his ability to stick a foot in the ground and accelerate after making catches. In the video above, Loveland catches a short hook over the middle and explodes off one leg to make a pursuing defender miss in a phone booth. In another clip, he shows he can threaten linebackers up the seam with his speed, widening them, only to explode back inside to create a wide open throwing lane for his quarterback.

Most tight ends who excel as pass catchers normally have some shortcomings as run blockers. That’s actually not the case with Loveland. He proved time and time again that be can create movement and displace defenders to open run lanes. That Wolverine rushing attack was pivotal in them winning a title and Loveland did more than his fair share of the dirty work.

Even at 245 pounds, Loveland looks a bit lean. That’s what makes his ability as a run blocker even more impressive. However, I believe he could stand to add another 5-10 pounds of muscle mass to even further his already-intimidating presence on a football field.
