MBTA bus, subway, ferry, Commuter Rail, and RIDE transportation will be free after 9:30 p.m. on July 4th as the city prepares to host over a million visitors, the T announced Monday.

Additional MBTA staff and Transit Police will be on hand Thursday to help with safety, wayfinding, boarding, paying for fares, and schedule information, the MBTA said in its statement.

The MBTA is encouraging people to use public transportation rather than drive if they go to the fireworks display on the Esplanade or other events in the city.

The MBTA said people traveling on Thursday should plan their trips and be aware of holiday service schedules.
