MLB insider outlined possible Red Sox trade target to help pitching staff

A Red Sox trade could emerge in the next month, but will Boston be a buyer or seller?

The possible Red Sox trade market: The Red Sox are 8-2 over the last 10 games, and have suddenly jumped into a wild card spot (albeit with months to go in the 2024 season).

Boston’s newfound capacity to stay above .500 has also ensured that trade rumors are beginning to bubble to the surface. The trade deadline, set for July 30, provides an interesting target for Alex Cora’s team. What will the Red Sox record be in a little over a month, and how will that shape the possibility of being a buyer or seller?

MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently outlined a possible trade target for the Red Sox (among other teams) in a column previewing potential deals. According to Feinsand, 34-year-old left-hander Tyler Anderson of the Angels could be on Boston’s radar.

Anderson currently sports a 2.48 ERA through 15 starts, with a 6-7 record overall. The Angels, at 30-46, hold the third worst record in the American League and are likely sellers at the deadline.

“He’s signed for $13 million this season and next, but given the need for rotation help around the league, the Angels figure to have suitors if they opt to move the southpaw,” wrote Feinsand. “Anderson has been excellent of late, pitching to a 2.00 ERA in 45 innings over his past seven starts.”

Still, advanced stats suggest the veteran might not be able to sustain his current ERA standards, especially at Fenway Park.

The other part of the discussion is whether or not the Red Sox will definitely be a buyer at the deadline. Boston only recently escaped the .500 mark, and face multiple series against the Yankees (as well as a series vs. the Dodgers) in July.

Should the Red Sox fall out of contention prior to the deadline, Feinsand also provided a few names that could move elsewhere.

“Kenley Jansen, Tyler O’Neill, Chris Martin and Nick Pivetta,” he listed of potentially available players on Boston’s roster.

“Only time will tell when it comes to the dozen or so fringe teams that aren’t clear-cut buyers or sellers just yet.”

Daily highlight: Oakland Athletics outfielder Miguel Andujar not only made the catch at the wall, but turned around and instantly made an incredible throw to get the runner at third.
