Injury news: Rehab assignments, Ross setback, Gasser update?

Pat Murphy gave lots of injury updates before today’s game

Before this evening’s game with the Toronto Blue Jays, Pat Murphy gave updates on a bevy of injured Brewers. Some news was encouraging. Some was not.

First, rehab assignments. The team announced that Garrett Mitchell’s rehab assignment at the Arizona Complex League began today. Murphy also told reporters that DL Hall is on his way to Nashville to start his rehab assignment, and J.B. Bukauskas, who threw live batting practice today, will follow by the end of the week. Jakob Junis is also throwing a simulated game in Arizona on Wednesday and may be able to rejoin the Brewers after that.

Other news that wasn’t as good: first, Joe Ross had some sort of unidentified setback. He was originally expected to be able to rejoin the team as early as next week, but it appears that will not happen now. Details at this point are sketchy on Ross, so stay tuned for updates.

Finally, Murphy said out loud what many people have probably been fearing: he thinks that Robert Gasser is done for the year. Murphy makes clear that this is not official and that rest and rehab is still an option (Gasser has not yet had the third opinion on his elbow after differing opinions from the team and from Dr. Neal ElAttrache), but Murphy says that he is operating as if he’s out for the season and hoping for the best.

The setback to Ross and the potential end of Gasser’s season are further blows to an already depleted starting rotation. Something to keep in mind as trade season begins to rev up.
