The Suns finally sign a point guard, albeit on a two-way contract

If there is one thing the Phoenix Suns need, it’s help at the point guard position. Today, they received some. Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier today that the Phoenix Suns signed Collin Gillespie to a two-way contract. Gillespie will be going into his second year in the NBA as he spent his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets.

In his rookie season, Gillespie averaged 3.6 points per game and 1.1 assists per game as he shot 46% from the field and 39% from three. Collin also played eight games for the Nuggets G-League affiliate the Grand Rapids Gold. In those eight games he averaged 21.1 points per game, 10.5 assists, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.0 steals while shooting 44.8% from the field and 39.7% from three.

Now I know this isn’t a dazzling move but with the new Suns G-League team coming this season the Suns can now make signings like this and can start producing young potential talent out of their G-League affiliate like other contenders in the league. One thing I will say is that Collin is a bit older for a player entering his second year in the league at the age of 25. For example, guys like Nassir Little and Bol Bol are a year younger than Collin and Devin Booker is just two years older than Collin and Booker will be going into his tenth year in the NBA.

Gillespie spent five years at Villanova before entering the draft. Collin has also already been a part of a winning culture and was drafted into one in Denver, he also got to be in a locker room with 3-time MVP Nikola Jokic and now gets to be in a locker room with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. At the end of the day, this is more of a buy-low and hopefully sell-high pickup for the Suns.
