NBA Free Agency 2024: Wizards decline Landry Shamet’s option

Shamet shot 33.8% from three with Washington last season.

The Washington Wizards have declined Landry Shamet’s team option, making him an unrestricted free agent, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Shamet’s $11 million salary for the 2024-25 season was non-guaranteed, allowing Washington to cut ties with him at no financial cost. Shamet, 27, will be a coveted on the open market for contending teams in search of shooting.

The Wizards acquired Shamet last June in a trade that sent Bradley Beal Phoenix. During his lone season in Washington, Shamet averaged 7.1 points on just 33.8% from three, a steep drop-off from his career 38% 3pt.

For the Wizards, this opens up a roster spot, which could loom large depending on their decisions with veteran point guards Tyus Jones and Malcolm Brogdon.

Washington pushed Shamet’s guarantee date back two weeks to try to find a trade partner, but it appears they were unsuccessful in that venture, ultimately cutting ties with Shamet for zero return. While the Wizards certainly hoped for some value in return, one positive is that Shamet’s rotational minutes will now be allocated elsewhere, likely to a younger guard such as Bilal Coulibaly or Bub Carrington.
