On Sunday, the Washington Mystics announced that they waived Jakia Brown-Turner, Elissa Cunane and Kaylynne Truong.

This means that the Mystics roster is now down to 12 players. Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post listed them here.

Of the players who were waived. I was disappointed that Truong was part of these cuts. She was the Mystics’ second round pick this year. However, she did suffer a mild ankle injury during training camp. And rookie-in-name-only guard Julie Vanloo was the frontrunner to be a rotation guard all along.

The Mystics aren’t alone when it comes to teams letting go of good players. This is happening across the league. WNBA teams can only have 11 or 12 players each, depending on how salaries are allocated.

As we stated earlier this month, these players all faced longer odds to make the team in any circumstance. Though they are no longer on the team for now, Brown-Turner, Cunane and Truong could always be called back to the Mystics (or any team) midseason. That’s because they can always sign a short-term or injury hardship contract if and when other teams have injuries to their rosters.
