Each state in India is governed by a chief minister who has been voted into power.
Union territories, on the other hand, have a governor at the helm with the exception of Delhi and Puducherry, who also have serving
chief ministers.
A Chief Minister's term lasts five years, but there are no limits on how many times they can be reelected. For instance, Naveen Patnaik has been Odisha's Chief Minister since March 2000, serving over 24 years. However, he recently faced defeat in the state assembly elections and will soon step down from his position.
A stark gender disparity also stands out. Among the 30 heads of state, only one is a woman — Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal.
Besides the BJP and Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party is the third party to have Chief Ministers in more than one state.
The BJP has the highest number of Chief Ministers, with 12, followed by the Congress with 3 Chief Ministers, and the AAP with 2.

It is important to note that after the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir is now a Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly, not a state. However, the region is currently under President's Rule, so there is no serving Chief Minister at the moment.
