In case you've been a bit unplugged recently and somehow this article is your introduction to the incomparable, stunning, captivating Chappell Roan, let me start by welcoming you to the first day of the rest of your life. Chappell Roan is an immensely talented singer and songwriter who has recently taken the whole world by storm. This queer pop icon is quickly capturing hearts and building a community thanks to her brilliant songwriting, dynamic drag persona, infectious energy, and empowering anthems.
Though Chappell has been making music for years, her career recently skyrocketed with the release of her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The album details the many highs and lows of Chappell's journey as an artist, from her upbringing in Missouri to her time in LA, where she balanced many odd jobs while recording music. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was released in September 2023, and Chappell has surged in popularity since.
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is an incredible blend of energetic pop tracks, emotional ballads, and theatrical genius. As a member of the queer community, Chappell's music and her shows create a safe, welcoming, and lively space for queer folks to have fun, be celebrated, and express themselves.
Chappell Roan world domination is fully underway, and millions of hearts have been touched, mine included. I have been so completely obsessed with and dependent on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess for MONTHS now, and there's no end in sight. It's a flawlessly executed album with absolutely no skips. Though every song is uniquely special to me in its own way, I decided it might be fun (or possibly just painful!) to try and rank them for myself.
Before I start what is sure to be an emotionally draining attempt at ranking 14 perfect songs, I want to reiterate how much I adore this album and Chappell's integrity as an artist. I want to celebrate every song mentioned, and higher or lower rankings do not indicate quality in ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM. This is simply my opinion AT THE MOMENT (my ranking has changed many times throughout the last few months), and I encourage you to disagree with me and defend your favorites. This album is magic from start to finish, and I'm actually devastated all songs can't be tied for first, second, and third place. ANYWAY, that's enough stalling. Let's get into my ranking.
14."After Midnight"
13."Kaleidoscope"
12."California"
11."Guilty Pleasure"
10."Coffee"
9."Hot to Go!"
8."Femininomenon"
7."Picture You"
6."Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl"
5."Casual"
4."Naked in Manhattan"
3."Pink Pony Club"
2."Red Wine Supernova"
1."My Kink Is Karma"
Okay, I'm feeling genuine fatigue right now. I can't stop obsessing over each and every song placement and rationale. I fear there will never be enough words to convey the way each and every song on this album moves me. I could rearrange this ranking a thousand times and still make it make sense. That's how you know the album is something truly special. I also know my ranking is extremely fleeting. It's how I feel today, but it wasn't how I felt a few months or even weeks ago, and it could change again. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is a masterpiece with 14 expertly crafted, unique songs. I hope you've been listening and loving it, too, and I'd love for you to share your favorite songs (and why!) in the comments below! Thanks for powering through with me!
