The Nightly: July 3rd, 2024

Hello Nightly!!!

Tonight we look at Hell In A Cell 2016. First up, Dana Brooke vs. Bayley on the undercard. This was a fine competent match, but it didn’t need to be on this show, this felt more at home on the pre-show or on Raw.

And in the main event, it was Sasha vs. Charlotte inside Hell In A Cell, making it the first women’s match to main event a PPV, as well as the first Women’s HIAC match in general. This actually held up better than I remember, I remembered it being disappointing, but I do think this was better than their Summerslam match to an extent. Both women worked very hard, but the booking and production kind of held them back. WWE treated this match like a big deal, as both women even got special Wrestlemania like entrances here, but the match also felt somewhat overproduced in an attempt to make moments, and it felt kind of cynical at times because of that, particularly the opening with them ripping off Mankind and Taker. The finish was also weird as Charlotte winning basically as clean as you could win a Hell In A Cell match in Sasha’s home town really did not work. But overall, a solid match, and a solid foundation for future HIAC matches for the Women’s Division.

On to the Nightly.
