A suspected electrical fire in the rectory of St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis on Wednesday was quickly brought under control, according to the Annapolis Fire Department.

Fire crews responded to 109 Duke of Gloucester at approximately 11:25 a.m. for reports of a fire. There they found a sprinkler activated on the second floor. The sprinkler was able to contain the fire to one location. It took crews about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control. The fire originated in a second floor bathroom of the rectory, according to a department news release.

Once the fire was under control priests and employees were able to return to the building and no one was displaced, said Christine Bervid, St. Mary’s communications coordinator.

About 60 firefighters from the Annapolis Fire Department, Anne Arundel County Fire Department and Naval Support Activity Annapolis Fire Department responded to the scene.

The Fire and Explosive Services Unit determined the fire to be accidental with an estimated dollar loss of $50,000, the department said.
