Increased fire activity forces closure of SR 20 North Cascades Highway near Easy Pass trailhead

WINTHROP – An increase in fire activity on the Easy Fire requires the closure of SR 20/North Cascades Highway between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) as of 8 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 4.

The Easy Fire started July 16 near the Easy Pass trailhead. In the last 24 hours, fire activity has increased near the roadway, and this section of the road must close for the safety of the traveling public and the fire response crews. The closure is in place until further notice. There are no detours on U.S. Forest Service roads.

Road closure information is posted in the WSDOT real-time travel center, @wsdot_east and @wsdot_north on X/Twitter and updates will be provided as available. Wildfire information can be found by visiting the Washington State Department of Natural Resources wildfire incident information webpage.

Goodell Creek Campground Closure Due to Fire Activity

Due to firefighting activity, Goodell Creek Campground, raft launch, and picnic area are closed until further notice. An illegal campfire spread to a large cedar tree and continues to slowly burn.

There are additional area, trail, front and backcountry campground, and cross-country zone closures due to fire activity across the area. Park closure information can be found on the park’s Fire Closures page.

Campfires were banned within all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex on July 8. The burn ban is in effect to help reduce the chance of human-caused wildfires during drought-like conditions  with prolonged high summer temperatures.

The following trails are closed, including backcountry camps and cross-country zones along closed trails:

Hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions are expected in the area over  the next couple of days which has the potential to increase fire  behavior. The Flat Creek Fire is approximately 5 acres in steep and  rugged terrain in the Flat Creek drainage. Visit inciweb for up-to-date information on the Pioneer Fire.

There are multiple fires in and near North Cascades National Park  Service Complex. Park closure information can be found on the park’s Fire Closures page.
