Some Illinois DMVs impacted by Microsoft outages

CHICAGO (CBS) — DMVs in Illinois were impacted by the global Microsoft outages on Friday morning. According to Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, the outage may impact DMV operating hours. 

The issue was caused by a technical problem that global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said it had identified in its software and was working to resolve. CrowdStrike provides antivirus software to Microsoft for its Windows devices.

Giannoulias' office said the Microsoft outage affected all 138 DMV facilities in the state Friday morning. By 12:40 p.m., all DMVs in Chicago were 100% operational, and all other DMVs in the state were open, and "serving customers in some capacity."

"We apologize for the inconvenience," Giannoulias said in a post on X.

Microsoft said on social media that it had "completed our mitigation actions and our telemetry indicates all previously impacted Microsoft 365 apps and services have recovered. We're entering a period of monitoring to ensure impact is fully resolved."  

In a statement shared Friday with CBS News and on social media, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said the issue had been identified and a solution was being implemented.
