  • Reds' Connor Overton: Makes return from minor-league IL

Overton (elbow) has given up five earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.1 innings in two relief appearances for Triple-A Louisville since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.

Overton made three starts at the big-league level for the Reds last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on May 14 -- less than a year after his procedure -- before being pulled off the assignment a week later. Overton returned to action in the ACL over the All-Star break, and after eventually moving up to High-A Dayton for a rehab outing on July 27, he was cleared to make his 2024 Louisville debut. The right-hander could eventually be an option for Louisville's rotation once he gets more stretched out.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Injured at Triple-A

Triple-A Louisville placed Hurtubise on its 7-day injured list Friday with an unspecified injury.

Hurtubise received his first taste of the big leagues in mid-May and stuck around with the Reds through June 21, when he was optioned to Louisville after going 0-for-14 over his final nine games with the big club. Since that time, Hurtubise turned in an underwhelming .215/.339/.290 slash line with one home run and eight stolen bases in 30 games with Louisville before succumbing to an injury.

  • Reds' Reiver Sanmartin: Healthy at Triple-A

Sanmartin (elbow) has produced a 5.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 3:2 K:BB in 6.2 innings over his seven relief appearances since being activated from Triple-A Louisville's 60-day injured list July 25.

Sanmartin opened the season on the shelf at Triple-A while he completed his recovery from his July 7, 2023 Tommy John surgery. Just over 12 months after surgery, he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, where he made three appearances before being added back to the Triple-A roster. Sanmartin previously made 59 appearances (six starts) at the big-league level with the Reds from 2021 through 2023 but will likely need to show better results at Triple-A before he gets another look in the majors.

  • Reds' Chase Burns: Will make full season debut in 2025

Burns, the Reds' first-round pick in the 2025 draft, is working out at the Reds' spring training facility in Arizona and will make his full season debut next spring, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Burns will pitch some in the instructional league in the fall as well, following the same path as last year's first-round pick, Rhett Lowder. "Multiple factors played into the decision," Reds player development director Jeremy Farrell said. "But given the time off he had from the end of the Wake Forest season and wanting to set him up for 2025, the plan will be for him to pitch competitively in instructional league and then go into a normal offseason routine to prepare for next year."

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Out of Sunday's lineup

Candelario is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.

Candelario started the previous 34 games after missing some time in late June due to a hamstring issue, and he'll sit after going 0-for-3 Saturday to end a seven-game hit streak. Jonathan India will serve as the designated hitter while Santiago Espinal starts at second base.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Resting against lefty

Fraley is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.

The lefty-hitting Fraley will bow out of the starting nine while the Brewers bring a southpaw (DL Hall) to the hill for the series finale. Stuart Fairchild will check in for Fraley in right field.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Nearly unhittable in no-decision

Martinez allowed one hit and no walks while striking out seven batters over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Saturday.

Martinez allowed just two batters to reach base over his seven innings, yielding a single to Gary Sanchez in the fourth frame and hitting Sanchez with a pitch in the seventh. His brilliance didn't earn him a victory, though, as Brewers starter Tobias Myers went toe-to-toe with Martinez, recording 7.1 scoreless innings of his own. Martinez had been working primarily as a reliever until recently, and over two starts since rejoining the rotation Aug. 5, he's tossed 12 scoreless frames while giving up five hits and posting a 12:0 K:BB. Given that success, it's logical that he'll stick in the rotation, and he's tentatively slated to face the Royals at home next week.

  • Reds' Yosver Zulueta: Optioned to Louisville

The Reds optioned Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

The move makes room on the 26-man roster for the reinstatement of right-hander Emilio Pagan (lat) from the 60-day injured list. Zulueta made five major-league outings since being recalled from Louisville on July 30, posting a 4.05 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 6.2 innings. Across 29 outings in Triple-A this season, Zulueta has recorded two saves with a 2.18 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 41.1 innings.

  • Reds' Emilio Pagan: Reinstated off IL

Pagan (lat) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Saturday.

After three rehab outings, Pagan travelled with the Reds on Friday for the weekend series against the Brewers. Now healthy, the 33-year-old will provide right-handed relief out of Cincinnati's bullpen. To make room for Pagan on the 26-man roster, the Reds optioned right-hander Yosver Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Back in lineup

Fraley (ankle) is starting in right field and batting eighth in Saturday's game against the Brewers.

Fraley rolled his left ankle during an at-bat in the second inning of Friday's loss to Milwaukee, and he was taken out of the contest in the fourth frame. He won't end up missing any time, and he'll face off against Brewers right-hander Tobias Myers in Saturday's game. Since the All-Star break, Fraley is slashing .298/.327/.511 with two home runs and nine RBI across 49 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Snaps homer drought

Steer went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Brewers.

Steer turned on the first pitch he saw to lead off the seventh inning with his 16th home run of the season. It was the first homer in 19 games for Steer, who's experienced a cold second half. He batted .141/.179/.234 over the first 16 games following the All-Star break before logging a pair of two-hit games Thursday and Friday.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Fills in, homers off righty

Fairchild entered Friday's game after Jake Fraley (ankle) was removed and went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in an 8-3 loss to Milwaukee.

Fairchild swatted his eighth homer of the season as part of the Reds' three-run seventh inning. It came off a right-hander; Fairchild is batting .152 with a .522 OPS against righties this season. It's unclear why Cincinnati manager David Bell went with Fairchild instead of the lefty-hitting Will Benson, who has slightly better results against right-handers. Bell told MLB.com following the game that Fraley is "fine" and could return to action Saturday.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Expected back Saturday

Fraley (ankle) is expected to play Saturday, MLB.com reports.

Fraley rolled his ankle during an at-bat in the second inning of Friday's 8-3 loss to the Brewers. Following the game, Reds manager David Bell said Fraley was "fine" and "should be back in there" Saturday. Fraley was replaced Friday by Stuart Fairchild.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Surrenders eight runs in loss

Spiers (4-4) took the loss Friday, allowing eight runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings against Milwaukee. He struck out seven.

The Cincinnati right-hander's outing began on a sour note, as he allowed a three-run homer to Willy Adames in the first inning. In total, the Brewers knocked four extra-base hits off Spiers, who has failed to reach the sixth inning in five consecutive starts. Over than span, he's gone 2-3 with a 6.39 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 25.1 innings. Spiers will look to bounce back in his next start, currently scheduled to come against the Cardinals at home next week.

  • Reds' Jake Fraley: Removed with injury

Fraley was removed from Friday's game against the Brewers with a sprained left ankle, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Fraley limped out of the batter's box after grounding out to shortstop in the second inning, and he was eventually pulled during the fourth frame. The severity of his injury isn't immediately clear, though the fact he was able to remain in the game for an additional inning could be an indication that he won't need to miss much time.
