  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: On bench Friday

Rocchio is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.

Rocchio sat out two of the Guardians' final three games leading up to the All-Star break and will remain out of the starting lineup Friday. The 23-year-old is 0-for-12 in his last four starts. Daniel Schneemann will bat seventh and play shortstop.

  • Guardians' Travis Bazzana: Receives $8.95 million bonus

The Guardians signed Bazzana on Friday, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.

The first overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Bazzana has agreed to a signing bonus of $8.95 million, which is below the $9.25 million No. 2 overall pick Chase Burns received and well under the assigned $10.57 million slot value for the top pick. Bazzana is a lefty-hitting second baseman who could move through the Guardians' minor-league system quickly.

  • Guardians' Matthew Boyd: Ready for rehab assignment

Boyd (elbow) began a rehab assignment Tuesday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, covering three innings and striking out seven while allowing an unearned run on three hits and one walk.

Boyd signed a one-year contract with the Guardians last month and was immediately placed on the 15-day injured list as he continues to work his way back from June 2023 Tommy John surgery. The veteran southpaw will probably need most, if not all, of his allotted 30-day rehab window to get stretched back out, putting him on track for activation around mid-August if all goes well.

  • Guardians' Aidan Major: Selected by Guardians in Round 5

The Guardians have selected Major with the 146th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Major stands at only 5-foot-11, though he can still pump his fastball up to 96 mph. He complements his heater with a slider, cutter and changeup, all of which can generate whiffs. Major's size is a concern, particularly because he's recovering from surgery to repair his UCL that he underwent this spring.

  • Guardians' Rafe Schlesinger: Plucked by Cleveland

The Guardians have selected Schlesinger with the 113th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The southpaw pitched out of the bullpen for most of his career at the University of Miami, but Schlesinger showed some intriguing assets as a starter in 2024. His fastball ticked up and topped out at 97 mph, his slider would occasionally flash plus, and he showed a good feel for his changeup. Erratic mechanics and a low arm slot profile him as a likely reliever as a pro, but if the Guardians can help him refine his delivery and make it more consistent, he could prove to be a steal in the fourth round.

  • Guardians' Joey Oakie: Cleveland bound at pick No. 84

The Guardians selected Oakie with the 84th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A prep right-hander out of Iowa, Oakie didn't face high-level competition even by the standard of high-school pitchers, but he impressed the Guardians enough with his makeup and his mid-80s slider -- which already grades out as a plus pitch -- to come off the board in the third round. In addition to the slider, Oakie mixes in a fastball that sits around 92-to-94 miles per hour, but his arsenal is shallow beyond those two offerings. Though he has a slender build at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Oakie has a quick, low-effort delivery that could allow him to stay on a starter's development track during his professional career.

  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Swipes bag Sunday

Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Rays.

Gimenez went 18 games without a steal, though his chances were a bit limited since he got on base at a .275 clip in that span. The second baseman is still seeing most of the playing time at the keystone, though he's regularly batted sixth for nearly three weeks after often hitting second. Gimenez has 15 steals in 18 attempts, five home runs, 45 RBI, 43 runs scored and a .252/.304/.339 slash line through 89 contests this season.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Logs fifth steal

Kwan went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Rays.

This was Kwan's first steal since June 25 and his fifth of the campaign on nine attempts. Given he missed a month with a hamstring issue, it's not a surprise he's been a bit more cautious on the basepaths. The outfielder is batting .283 in July and now has a .352/.407/.512 slash line with nine home runs, 27 RBI, 55 runs scored, 14 doubles and two triples through 308 plate appearances this year.

  • Guardians' Ben Lively: Fans seven in loss

Lively (8-5) yielded two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Rays.

Lively turned in a strong performance aside from serving up solo homers to Jose Siri and Brandon Lowe. The Rays threw a combined shutout and stuck Lively with the tough-luck loss. His seven punchouts matched a season best, and he's now hit that mark four times in 2024. Lively will begin the second half with a strong 3.58 ERA and 78:25 K:BB through 16 starts. In eight outings since the start of June, he's registered a 4.40 ERA.

  • Guardians' Jacob Cozart: Picked by Cleveland

The Guardians have selected Cozart with the 48th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Cozart is a glove-first catcher from North Carolina State, so he will be much more interesting in real life than in fantasy. The 6-foot-3 lefty hitter could get to 20-homer power down the road, but he projects for a fringe-average hit tool.

  • Guardians' Braylon Doughty: Popped by Cleveland

The Guardians have selected Doughty with the 36th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Doughty is a 6-foot-1 hard-throwing righty who went to high school in California. His fastball is already a mid-90s offering, and he is adept at spinning a powerful low-80s curveball and a a low-80s sweeper. He is a good athlete and should be able to throw enough strikes to start. There could be upwards of three plus pitches in Doughty's repertoire in time, so there's a high ceiling here to go with the inherent risk that comes with all prep pitching prospects.
