  • Tigers' Matt Vierling: Rejoining lineup Sunday

Vierling (back) is batting leadoff as the designated hitter Sunday against the Giants.

The 27-year-old sat out the past two games after he exited Thursday's contest due to lower-back spasms, but he'll return to action Sunday in a non-defensive role. Vierling is batting .333 through six games in August but is in the midst of a 14-game homer drought.

  • Tigers' Parker Meadows: Triples, scores in loss

Meadows went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Giants.

Meadows scored Detroit's lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning after hitting his one-out triple. The outfielder has now played in five contests since returning from a hamstring injury, and he's gone 10-for-22 with four extra-base hits, four runs scored and four RBI. If Meadows can sustain his recent level of performance, he'll make a big fantasy impact during the stretch run.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Takes loss in bulk relief

Hurter (0-1) took the loss against the Giants on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.

Hurter followed opener Alex Faedo and was burned by a three-run fifth frame. The rookie has served as a bulk reliever in both his major-league appearances and has posted a solid 8:1 K:BB in eight innings. He increased his pitch count from 36 to 76 and should remain in the mix for work as a starter or bulk reliever moving forward.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Opening Saturday

Faedo will serve as the Tigers' opener during Saturday's game against the Giants, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Saturday will mark Faedo's fourth start of the season and his second of August. He was able to last 1.2 frames during his most recent opening assignment and will likely pitch a similar amount of innings against the Giants before handing the ball to Brant Hurter, who is expected to pitch in bulk relief.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Not starting Saturday

Rogers isn't in the Tigers' lineup Saturday versus the Giants.

Rogers has split time evenly behind the plate with Dillon Dingler ever since the latter arrived in the majors in late July. He'll step aside once again Saturday while Dingler catches for opener Alex Faedo.

  • Tigers' Matt Vierling: Remaining sidelined Saturday

Vierling (back) isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants.

Vierling was taken out of Thursday's game due to back spasms, and he'll now miss his second consecutive game as he continues to recover. Ryan Vilade will pick up another start in right field instead and bat ninth.

  • Tigers' Akil Baddoo: Back in majors

The Tigers recalled Baddoo from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.

With Wenceel Perez (oblique) headed for the injured list, the Tigers will call upon Baddoo to make up for the lost depth in their outfield unit. The 25-year-old has gone just 7-for-60 in the majors this season, though he owns an .847 OPS in 75 plate appearances since being optioned to Triple-A on July 12.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Lands on injured list

The Tigers placed Perez on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left oblique strain.

Perez had to make an early exit from Friday's contest due to what was labeled as abdominal tightness, but further evaluation confirmed the 24-year-old suffered a strain in his oblique. He'll now be sidelined until at least Aug. 20, and Akil Baddoo will come up from Triple-A Toledo to replenish the Tigers' outfield depth.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Swipes bag in return

Baez (neck) went 1-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Baez swiped third base and then had no trouble scurrying home after a pair of errant throws by the Giants. He missed just one game with a bout of neck soreness. He's up to eight steals on nine attempts this year, with two of those thefts coming over seven contests in August. The shortstop is slashing just .181/.222/.277 with four home runs, 33 RBI, 23 runs scored and 12 doubles across 73 games.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Notches steal in loss

Keith went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Keith has gone 7-for-33 (.212) over his first eight games in August. His steal Friday was his sixth of the campaign and his first since July 7. The infielder has added a decent .251/.307/.388 slash line with 11 home runs, 42 RBI, 41 runs scored, 11 doubles and three triples across 397 plate appearances. Keith continues to see a majority of the playing time at second base despite his fairly average performance, and he also regularly bats in the top third of the order.

  • Tigers' Kenta Maeda: Decent showing as bulk reliever

Maeda allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two without walking a batter over 4.2 innings of relief versus the Giants on Friday. He didn't factor in the decision in the Tigers' 3-2 loss.

Maeda continues to stretch out in anticipation of a return to the rotation -- he threw 72 pitches (46 strikes) Friday, up slightly from 69 pitches in his previous outing. The veteran right-hander had a decent performance but couldn't sustain a 2-0 lead, allowing a run to score on a sacrifice fly in both the seventh and eighth innings. Maeda is now at a 6.59 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 66:24 K:BB over 84.2 innings across 21 appearances (16 starts). He's projected to make his next appearance at home versus the Mariners, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him follow an opener at least one more time.

  • Tigers' Beau Brieske: Strong showing as opener

Brieske allowed one walk and struck out five over three scoreless and hitless innings while taking a no-decision Friday in the Tigers' 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Brieske made his third start of the season and matched his longest outing. He threw 31 of 49 pitches for strikes in the impressive turn as an opener, though it doesn't appear he has a path to the rotation at this time. He last functioned primarily as a starter in 2022 and has worked out of the bullpen for 24 of his 27 appearances in 2024. For the season, Brieske has a 4.57 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB over 41.1 innings.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Exits with injury

Perez was removed from Friday's game against the Giants due to left abdominal tightness, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Perez drew a walk and struck out before being pulled from the game in the fourth inning. He'll presumably undergo further testing to determine the severity of his injury. Bligh Madris entered as the 24-year-old's replacement, but Parker Meadows could begin to see more work against left-handed pitching if Perez is forced to miss any time.

  • Tigers' Riley Greene: Running bases Sunday

Greene (hamstring) is scheduled to begin running the bases Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Greene resumed taking batting practice last week, and Sunday will mark his first time running the bases since he landed on the IL with a strained right hamstring. The Tigers have yet to announce any plans for sending the outfielder on a rehab assignment, though that could change if he's able to get through Sunday's base-running session without any problems.

  • Tigers' Parker Meadows: On bench against southpaw

Meadows is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

The lefty-hitting Meadows will dodge a matchup with southpaw Robbie Ray on Friday as Wenceel Perez takes over in center field. Meadows is slashing .186/.278/.373 in 115 plate appearances with the Tigers this season, although he's reeled off four straight multi-hit performances since coming off the IL last weekend.

  • Tigers' Bligh Madris: Resting against lefty

Madris isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Madris will get a breather during Friday's series opener with left-hander Robbie Ray slated to take the mound for San Francisco. Andy Ibanez will step in to cover first base and bat leadoff.
