  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Successful spot start

Kochanowicz (1-2) earned the victory Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over 7.2 innings against the Nationals. He struck out two.

Kochanowicz was recalled from Double-A to make the spot start, holding the Nationals scoreless through seven prior to a homer by Jacob Young to lead off the eighth frame. He remained in the game, recording two more outs but was pulled following an RBI single by Luis Garcia. Despite the two late runs, Kochanowicz did more than enough to earn his first big-league win and showed massive improvement over his previous two starts when he allowed 11 earned runs over seven innings. Kochanowicz is likely to be sent back to the minors following this outing, but it was a promising start for the 23-year-old rookie, who lowered his ERA from 14.14 to 7.98.

  • Angels' Matthew Lugo: Out with undisclosed injury

Lugo, who is on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Salt Lake with an undisclosed injury, has not played since Aug. 2.

Lugo made a strong first impression, going 2-for-5 with a home run and a double in his first game for the Bees after getting traded to the Angels from the Red Sox at the deadline as part of the return for reliever Luis Garcia. However, he has not played since that debut game. The trade should make it easier for the 23-year-old left fielder to get a look in the majors either late this season or early next season. He is slashing .287/.376/.578 with a 23.6 percent strikeout rate, a 10.2 percent walk rate, 17 home runs and 16 steals in 79 games split between Double-A and Triple-A.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Receiving Sunday off

O'Hoppe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

O'Hoppe started the previous 10 games and will receive a rest Sunday after he posted a .486 OPS and 30.4 percent strikeout rate during that stretch. Matt Thaiss will step in behind the plate to catch for righty Jack Kochanowicz.

  • Angels' Willie Calhoun: On bench against lefty again

Calhoun is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

With southpaw MacKenzie Gore taking the hill for the Nationals, the lefty-hitting Calhoun will remain on the bench for the series finale. Calhoun has now been held out of the lineup in five straight contests, with the Angels facing off against left-handed staters in the last four of those games. The Angels will begin a three-game series Monday against a Toronto squad that features an all-right-handed rotation, so Calhoun should regain a regular spot in the lineup during the upcoming week.

  • Angels' Kevin Pillar: Drawing eighth straight start

Pillar will serve as the Angels' designated hitter and No. 3 batter in Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Though Pillar will draw an eighth consecutive start, the Mets have faced left-handed starters in six of those contests. The righty-hitting Pillar hasn't helped his case for earning more playing time against righties by batting .161 so far in August, and all of Taylor Ward, Mickey Moniak and Jo Adell are still likely to be prioritized in the outfield ahead of him.

  • Angels' Michael Stefanic: Getting fourth straight start

Stefanic will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Stefanic will pick up his fourth straight start, all of which have come against left-handed pitching. Though he's slashing .462/.500/.538 in eight games since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on July 30, Stefanic could be limited to a short-side platoon role in the infield now that Anthony Rendon has recently returned from the injured list.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Getting afternoon off

Rendon is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

With the series finale in Washington beginning at 11:35 a.m. ET, Rendon will be given a breather after he started at third base in each of the past three days while going 5-for-13 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Brandon Drury will man the hot corner in Rendon's stead.

  • Angels' Zach Neto: Strong showing against Nats

Neto went 3-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Nationals.

The shortstop took Patrick Corbin deep in the fifth inning, Neto's four homer in the last seven games. The 23-year-old is batting .448 (13-for-29) over that hot streak, pushing his slash line on the year up to .267/.329/.469, and he's closing in on his first career 20-20 campaign with 17 long balls and 21 steals through 114 contests.

  • Angels' Griffin Canning: Lasts seven frames in no-decision

Canning came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Nationals, giving up four runs on eight hits over seven innings. He didn't walk or strike out a batter.

The right-hander managed only seven swinging strikes among his 88 pitches as he let his defense do all the work, but Canning saw a potential win slip away when he got tagged for two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. It's the first time all season he'd failed to record a strikeout, and the first time he hadn't issued a free pass since April 13. Canning remains a mediocre fantasy option, posting a 6.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 30:15 K:BB through 35 innings since the beginning of July, and he lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against Atlanta.

  • Angels' Davis Daniel: No longer starting Sunday

Daniel will not start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

The Angels had previously named Daniel as the starter for Sunday's series finale, even though he would be pitching on three days' rest after tossing 83 pitches in the first game of a doubleheader with the Yankees on Wednesday. However, the team will now switch course and call up Jack Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City to start Sunday instead of having Daniel take the hill on short rest. Daniel is a candidate to pitch Monday against the Blue Jays on regular rest, though the Angels haven't released their probable starters for the three-game home series.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Making spot start

Kochanowicz will start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

With a rainout forcing the Angels into a doubleheader Wednesday, the team was in need of a starter for Sunday's game and recalled Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City to fill the void. The 23-year-old has made two starts for the Angels this season, surrendering 11 runs across seven frames. He isn't a recommended streaming option for Sunday.

  • Angels' Willie Calhoun: Idle versus lefty

Calhoun isn't in the Angels' lineup for Saturday's game against Washington, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

The left-handed-hitting Calhoun will step out of the lineup Saturday while southpaw Patrick Corbin toes the slab for the Nats. In Calhoun's place, Matt Thaiss will work as the DH and bat ninth.

  • Angels' Mickey Moniak: Not starting versus lefty

Moniak isn't in the Angels' lineup Saturday against Washington, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Moniak will take a seat as the left-handed Patrick Corbin starts on the mound for the Nationals. Taylor Ward, Kevin Pillar and Jo Adell will make up the Angels' outfield while Moniak rests.

  • Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Idle Saturday

Schanuel isn't in the Angels' lineup Saturday versus the Nationals, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Schanuel will get a chance to regroup after going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in Friday's contest. Brandon Drury will move to first base while Schanuel sits, allowing Michael Stefanic to start at the keystone.

  • Angels' Jose Marte: Placed on injured list

The Angels placed Marte on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a viral infection, retroactive to Aug. 8.

Marte has been surprisingly effective out of the bullpen for Los Angeles this year, posting a 2.33 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 19.1 innings after entering the season with an 8.14 ERA in the majors. However, he'll now be held out until at least Aug. 23 as he fights off an infection. Jack Kochanowicz was recalled from Double-A Rocket City in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Back in big leagues

The Angels recalled Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City on Saturday.

Kochanowicz was recalled from Double-A on Wednesday before being optioned back two days later without making an appearance. He'll now rejoin the Angels and will most likely be used as a long relief option out of the bullpen. Jose Marte (illness) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Collects three hits vs. former club

Rendon went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in a loss to the Nationals on Friday.

None of Rendon's three singles led to any runs for the Angels, but the performance was still a positive one for the third baseman, who was playing at Nationals Park for the first time since winning the World Series with Washington in 2019. Rendon has dealt with a bevy of injuries since joining the Angels in 2020, and he's played in only 36 contests so far this year. The 34-year-old has gone 5-for-11 with two walks over three contests since returning from his most recent stint on the injured list Aug. 7.
