  • Marlins' Derek Hill: Making sixth straight start

Hill will bat eighth as Miami's designated hitter Sunday against the Padres.

Hill will pick up his sixth straight start after going 5-for-19 with a double, a home run, two steals and nine RBI since being claimed off waivers by the Marlins last week. The 28-year-old will likely need to continue producing in order to retain the lineup spot, but for now he's settled into a regular role.

  • Marlins' Emmanuel Rivera: Filling smaller role

Rivera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.

Rivera's absence is his fourth in Miami's past six games, with both of his starts during that stretch coming against left-handed pitchers. Jake Burger is receiving more run at third base and Jesus Sanchez at designated hitter, which has opened up right field for Derek Hill, though the latter two have swapped those positions Sunday.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes two more bags Saturday

Edwards went 1-for-4 with two walks, a run scored and two stolen bases in Saturday's 9-8 extra-inning loss to the Padres.

The Marlins ran wild on Kyle Higashioka, going 5-for-5 on steal attempts on the afternoon with Edwards leading the charge. The 25-year-old shortstop is up to 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts through only 37 games on the season, but he's been even more dangerous on the basepaths over the last couple weeks, going 11-for-11 in the last 16 contests while slashing .359/.419/.469. The last player in MLB history to steal 100 or more bases over a full season was Vince Coleman in 1987 with 109, but that's the kind of pace Edwards is on right now.

  • Marlins' Roddery Munoz: Settles for no-decision Saturday

Munoz came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 9-8 extra-inning loss to the Padres, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.

The rookie right-hander left the game after 87 pitches (53 strikes) with the Marlins ahead 7-3, but the bullpen couldn't secure the win for him. Munoz hasn't lasted more than five innings in five straight outings, posting a poor 6.08 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB through 23.2 innings over that stretch, but Miami doesn't have any better, healthier options to replace him in the rotation. He lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend against the Mets.

  • Marlins' Emmanuel Rivera: Resting Saturday

Rivera isn't in the Marlins' lineup Saturday versus the Padres.

Rivera went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Friday, snapping a five-game hitting streak. His absence will put Jake Burger at third base and open a spot in the lineup for Derek Hill to start in center field while batting eighth.

  • Marlins' Jake Burger: Belts homer No. 20

Burger went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 6-2 extra-inning loss to the Padres.

The 28-year-old slugger opened the scoring in the fourth inning by taking Martin Perez deep, continuing a power surge that has seen Burger launch seven homers in the last 11 games while slashing .311/.347/.800 with 11 RBI. The improved performance at the plate could be due to his reduced defensive responsibilities -- he's played third base only three times during that stretch while lining up at first base and DH four times each. Burger is batting .242 on the season with 20 home runs and 50 RBI in 94 contests.

  • Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Strong start wasted Friday

Cabrera came away with a no-decision in Friday's 6-2 extra-inning loss to the Padres, allowing four hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander extended his shutout streak to 12 innings as he fired 64 of 106 pitches for strikes, but the Miami bullpen squandered a 2-0 lead as soon as Cabrera left the mound. Control remains an issue for the 26-year-old, but he's been able to work around the traffic he puts on the basepaths -- Cabrera has given up three runs or less in five straight starts, posting a 2.00 ERA over that stretch despite a less impressive 1.26 WHIP and 26:16 K:BB in 27 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next weekend against the Mets.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Idle against lefty

Sanchez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.

Sanchez will avoid a matchup with southpaw Martin Perez on Friday. Kyle Stowers, Derek Hill and David Hensley fill the outfield from left to right.

  • Marlins' Vidal Brujan: Sitting Friday

Brujan is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.

Brujan will be on the bench against the Padres, who'll start southpaw Martin Perez. Brujan has now been absent from the starting lineup in four consecutive games against left-handed pitching despite having a better OPS (.636) against lefties than righties (.616) this season.

  • Marlins' PJ Morlando: Done for season with back injury

Morlando will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a lumbar stress reaction, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Morlando played just one game with Single-A Jupiter before suffering the injury. There don't appear to be any long-term concerns for the 19-year-old, but with just a month left in the minor-league season, there's simply not enough time for Morlando to make it back. The 16th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Morlando is expected to have a normal offseason.

  • Marlins' Brett de Geus: Set for Marlins debut

The Marlins recalled de Geus from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

De Geus was claimed off waivers Monday and threw a scoreless inning in his only appearance for Jacksonville. He'll join a Marlins bullpen in need of reliable arms. The right-hander appeared in four games before being designated for assignment by Seattle, allowing one run across 3.1 innings.

  • Marlins' Kyle Tyler: DFA'd by Miami

The Marlins designated Tyler for assignment Friday.

The right-hander made his eighth outing of the season Thursday versus the Reds and gave up three runs over 4.1 innings, and it will end up being his last turn through the Marlins' rotation. Tyler posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 25:18 K:BB across 31.2 innings.

  • Marlins' John McMillon: Recalled from Triple-A

The Marlins recalled McMillon from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

McMillon was claimed off waivers from the Royals a week ago and will now receive an opportunity in the big-league bullpen. The right-hander made four appearances with Kansas City last season, allowing one run. He's posted a 6.32 ERA and 37:27 K:BB over 31.1 innings at the Triple-A level in 2024.

  • Marlins' Emmanuel Ramirez: Departs active roster

The Marlins optioned Ramirez to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Ramirez had been part of the 26-man roster since July 26, but after yielding seven runs (five earned) without logging an out Thursday, he'll be sent down to Triple-A. Prior to Thursday's outing, Ramirez had allowed four runs in 16.1 innings for Miami.

  • Marlins' Kent Emanuel: Back in majors

The Marlins selected Emanuel's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Emanuel has been moved off and on Miami's 26-man and 40-man rosters multiple times this season and he's now back in the big leagues again. The left-hander has permitted seven earned runs over 9.1 innings with the Marlins in 2024 and is likely to be deployed in long relief.

  • Marlins' Darren McCaughan: Moved to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned McCaughan to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

McCaughan joined the Marlins on Tuesday and allowed one run across five innings spanning two appearances. He'll return to Jacksonville as part of a flurry of transactions made by Miami on Friday. McCaughan has generated a 5.75 ERA across 36.0 innings for Jacksonville this season.
