  • Sam Hartman: Joins Commanders' taxi squad

Hartman signed with the Commanders' practice squad Wednesday.

Hartman sat out for most of training camp due to a shoulder injury, but he will stick around in Washington to serve as the team's practice squad quarterback. Marcus Mariota (groin) and Jeff Driskel are slated behind 2024 No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels on the depth chart. Hartman would figure to move up to the active roster should either of those three quarterbacks miss time.

Hartman (shoulder) will not play in the Commanders' preseason finale against the Patriots on Sunday.

Hartman sustained a shoulder injury in the leadup to Washington's second preseason game against Miami on Aug. 17. With Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota (groin) also not playing Sunday, the Commanders will go with Jeff Driskel and Trace McSorley under center for the preseason finale.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Finally back practicing

Hartman (shoulder) was back practicing Friday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.

Hartman hurt his shoulder during Washington's 20-17 loss to the Jets in the Commanders' preseason opener Aug. 10. He'll return to the practice field just two days out from the team's final preseason matchup versus the Patriots. If active Sunday, the rookie quarterback will need to play at a high level if he wants to elevate himself from what will likely be a practice-squad spot this season.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Ruled out to face Dolphins

Coach Dan Quinn said Thursday that Hartman (shoulder) will not suit up for Saturday's preseason game against Miami, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Hartman and No. 2 quarterback Marcus Mariota (groin) are both ruled out for Washington's second preseason game, so the team inked Trace McSorley as an additional depth option Thursday. As he competes for what will likely amount to a practice-squad spot at best, Hartman's next chance to suit up for exhibition action will come Aug. 25 against New England.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Dealing with shoulder issue

Hartman is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

It's not clear at this point when Hartman picked up the injury or how serious it might be. His absence should open up some reps at practice for veteran journeymen Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel.

  • Sam Hartman: Heading to Washington

Hartman is slated to sign with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports.

Following five years at Wake Forest where he set ACC records, Hartman transferred to Notre Dame for his super-senior season in an effort to prove himself in a pro-style offense. Hartman finished 2024 with a 63.5 percent completion rate for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was unable to replicate his prolific numbers from the previous two years and ultimately didn't hear his name called during the NFL Draft. Standing 6-foot-1 and 211 pounds, Hartman has an average arm but plenty of game experience. He joins a Washington quarterback room that includes No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels and veterans Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel and Jake Fromm.
