Krazy Kaplans in Hammond is one stop light away from the first I-94 exit into Indiana coming from Illinois. On Tuesday, the parking lot was filled with vehicles with Illinois license plates.

Greg Kaplan,owner of Krazy Kaplans, said Illinois residents make up 80% to 85% of his customers. Hoosiers tend to buy fireworks a few weeks ahead of the Fourth of July, he said.

With nests on telephone poles, once-endangered osprey are flying high in Cook County

The Forest Preserves program now bands up to 30 chicks a year, all raised by wild osprey — also known as sea hawks — that choose to build their massive nests on human-built platforms standing 50 to 80 feet above the ground. Read more here.

Ferrara to close North Chicago Jelly Belly plant

In a statement, Ferrara said the Jelly Belly workers are being offered transfers to jobs at the candy company’s five other Chicago area manufacturing facilities. Read more here.
