Europa League 2023/2024: Quarterfinals, Second Leg

While I certainly didn’t expect the Giallorossi to be up a goal heading into the home leg of this quarterfinal matchup with Milan, it’s a blessing that I will take in stride while not coming close to believing that it makes this tie a done deal. There’s no doubt that Milan will be looking to win tonight, and Daniele De Rossi will have to apply the same tactical know-how he used last week in an attempt to confound Pioli and his men.

Despite the injury to Evan Ndicka in Roma’s weekend match (get well soon, Evan), today’s starting lineup looks pretty much as expected, with the main change from last week’s match being the insertion of Edoardo Bove into the midfield alongside Leandro Paredes and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Bove’s inclusion here is almost certainly mainly due to Bryan Cristante’s suspension due to yellow card accumulation, but it is nevertheless a great chance for the young Italian to demand a more consistent spot in DDR’s midfield rotation moving forward.

My expectation for this match is that it will be a high-scoring one. Milan will be pressing from the word go to make up the goal differential, and Roma will need to count on the continued dominance of Mile Svilar alongside some attacking prowess from Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku, and Stephan El Shaarawy to secure advancement to the semi-finals. I’m hopeful that DDR can get the job done here; if he does, it will make the Friedkin’s announcement that Daniele will “ continue as Head Coach of AS Roma after this season and for the foreseeable future” taste even sweeter.
