Connor McDavid, Oilers vs. Panthers Game 7, Stanley Cup Final

Connor McDavid and the Oilers will face the Panthers on Monday night in Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final in Sunrise, Fla.AP

SUNRISE, Florida — The Edmonton Oilers are a win away from completing one of the greatest comebacks in sports history on Monday night in Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final vs. the Florida Panthers. Puck drop in Florida is set for 8 p.m. Eastern, with ABC televising the game.

The Oilers became just the third team in NHL history and the first since 1945 to force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final after trailing, 3-0, when they blew out the Panthers on Friday night in Game 6, 5-1. Only one of those two teams, the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, won Game 7.

Five different players scored for the Oilers, and they won despite Connor McDavid not recording a point.

Monday night’s Game 7 officially means either the Panthers will win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, or the Oilers will be the first Canadian team to hoist the Cup since the 1992-93 Montreal Canadiens.

What they’re saying

Oilers captain Connor McDavid on his approach to Game 7:

“It’s not your ordinary game, everybody understands that, but you’ve got to make it as ordinary as possible in your head...Our room has done a great job of being at our best in these big moments, and I would expect no different.”

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch on the confidence of his team to come back from 3-0 to force a Game 7:

“I don’t think there was ever a moment in that dressing room that they didn’t think they had a chance.”

Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk on the struggles of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky:

“It’s definitely not his fault...I think that’s up to us to tighten up defensively, get off to better starts. We’ve been trailing in each of the last three games, which might open you up a little bit and cost you more chances against. So, we have to be a lot better in front of him. And we will tomorrow. It’s definitely, definitely not his fault. Absolutely not.”

Panthers coach Paul Maurice:

“That’s actually what makes this whole thing awesome is the context of it. Nobody ever, ever, has played on a backdoor rink in Canada and scored the Game 3 overtime winner in the qualifying round. It’s one game, always, that excites you. And that is the context of this game and we will live in that context.”
