BRUNSWICK HILLS TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Initial plans for the Police Department's inaugural "Light Up The Police Station" Giving Tree and 2018 holiday community food drive kick-off were ambitious, according to Police Chief Tim Sopkovich.

"At first, we wanted to have a tree planted, something that could 'grow with the community,' set it up and decorate it," Sopkovich said.

And while time did not allow for that particular approach, the dozens of township residents who did come out for the Nov. 30 event were treated to an impressive spread -- even sans live Christmas tree.

"We really started planning this two weeks ago," Sopkovich said. "Everyone pitched in and provided donations of food and crafts. The Brunswick Hills Police Association built our coffee and cocoa bar."

In addition to the coffee and hot cocoa bar and crafts, the evening included a  lighting countdown, the collection of food and toy donations for area families in need this season, and a visit from Santa Claus -- as kids were able to write and deliver their wish lists directly to the man himself.

"It comes down to gathering with the community and family," said township resident Ryan Schuett.

Schuett attended with his wife, Elizabeth, and children Madeline, 10, Lauren, 9, and Andrew, 8.

By overwhelming consensus, the kids' favorite part of the evening was being able to compose and deliver their letters to Santa, which included requests ranging from a PlayStation and a headset to unicorn stuffed animals and a "Big Squishy."

"This is a really fun evening for us," Schuett said, fairly summing up the sentiment of everyone in the room.
