BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- When it comes to looking for someone to step forward and volunteer on a project, Fire Chief Josh Erskine has not had far to look since firefighter Keith Decumbe joined the department in 2008.
“Every day, he is working to make the department better,” Erskine said of Decumbe, the department’s 2019 Firefighter of the Year.
In particular, Erskine said, Decumbe has become his go-to man on special details involving equipment purchases and other management duties, where this year’s top Brunswick firefighter has exhibited a special efficiency and effectiveness, according to his boss.
A firefighter since 2006, Seven Hills resident Decumbe began his career as a part-time firefighter in Wickliffe and Willoughby Hills.
“It’s a good emotion when someone tells you that what you are doing helps,” Decumbe said. “If I can help in any way, I’m always willing.”
At the Oct. 28 Brunswick City Council meeting, Decumbe was presented a proclamation by Mayor Ron Falconi and members of City Council, congratulating him on being named Firefighter of the Year.
Decumbe thanked members of the department for the recognition.
“I appreciate any way I can help the department improve,” he said. “So don’t hesitate to ask; I’ll be your man. Thanks, guys.”
