CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- Diamond is a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who has become a totally unexpected blessing to our family. A former breeding dog, she became a pet for the first time when we adopted her three years ago.

We had already raised three of her puppies to adulthood. Her first-born, Ricky, is now 8 years old. When we heard Diamond's owner say that he was not going to keep her when her breeding days were over, we adopted her on the spot.

We anticipated that something special might happen when we reunited her with three of her offspring. My wife, Gladys, and two of the grandchildren, Joey and Maggie, were there for the reunion. What we witnessed when Diamond entered her new home was unforgettable, and left us in tears.

Diamond had not seen her pups since they were weaned at seven weeks old. Still, after all the years apart, she knew her now fully grown sons immediately, and they recognized their mother just as fast. They kissed, snuggled and cried for each other beyond control.

My wife and I are senior citizens who never dreamed that we would be rescuing our dogs' mother from an uncertain future. But that's exactly what happened three years ago. It doesn't make us any better than anyone else, but it is a prime example of how our lives can turn on a dime for the better sometimes.

Diamond is a senior dog who now acts like a puppy. She takes medication daily for a serious heart condition, common to the Cavalier breed.

Speaking of hearts, she permanently affected our hearts the moment she walked through the door. Knowing that she will spend her remaining time with family while still growing into the beautiful pet she was always meant to be brings us immeasurable joy.

Diamond is a gift that keeps on giving.

Jim Vittek,

Chagrin Falls
