CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Observances speak volumes this time of year. Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish family and friends as they begin the eight-day Festival of Lights at sundown tonight. We also remember this day back in 1941, with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Bless those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On a brighter note, the Solon Hometown Holiday Market, at 35800 Portz Parkway, will offer an Avant Garde Art and Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

Also included in the holiday shopping is Larchmere, with its array of antiques, books and the Fireworks Studio. You can learn the art of glass blowing and also take blacksmithing classes. Create the unique collectibles of tomorrow!

As we experience internet vs. in-town shopping, a look into mail order catalogs reveals how our ancestors lived and shopped in the late 1800s. The original illustrations were hand-drawn sketches of models, as well as the styled clothing.

Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward were two of the largest suppliers for mail order business. Not only clothing, but furnishings, tools and games, as well as medicinal products, were advertised in the catalogs. No batteries or charging stations needed!

Hello Yenke Peddler,

This KLM novelty row house has been in our collection as a souvenir for many years. I even use it as a vintage house for our miniature train display. Are such houses worth anything today?

M.K.

Hi Marianne,

Your ceramic house has a unique Netherland heritage. Every Oct. 7 since 1952, a new house is introduced as a promotion for passengers. KLM is the oldest airline, founded in 1919. The Delft Blue Pottery is still a very collectible Holland product. Value would be about $50.
