BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- With just a week to reach its goal of raising $75,000 for blood cancer research, members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student Visionaries of the Year, Team Brunswick For a Brighter Future, spoke before City Council Monday (Feb. 26).

“We feel our goal of $75,000 is within reach, but we need support from the corporate side,” said Team Brunswick co-candidate Teddy Bickley.

Co-candidate Maggie Romano said the team’s deadline for the current fundraising effort is March 8.

She explained that the group of 16 Brunswick students have each been touched by blood cancer, including the mother of one team member who is currently in remission and another member who is himself currently battling leukemia.

Teddy added that while the Visionaries of the Year group began for many as simply “an opportunity to get involved in something,” it soon became much more.

“When you see the effect it can have, it is something that is really exciting to be a part of,” he said.

City Council members commended the students both for their dedication to helping find a cure for blood cancers and the professionalism of the their appeal at the meeting.

“I am very proud seeing these Brunswick students,” said Council President and Ward 2 Councilman Nick Hanek. “Hopefully, we are seeing some of the future leaders of the community.”

Ward 3 Councilman Brandon Lambert said he was “blown away” by the students’ presentation.

Councilwoman-at-Large Kristy Piper said the group is a perfect example of the Brunswick City Schools’ Journey of a Blue Devil attributes of communication and empathy.

Councilman-at-Large Joe Delsanter, himself a cancer survivor, said the students’ efforts to support cancer research hit home for him.

“My brother was diagnosed with leukemia at 3 (years old), and at that time there were no support groups and the research was sporadic,” Delsanter said. “But he is a grandfather now and a father of three.”
