Local students make the grade: Medina County College Corner

MEDINA, Ohio -- Here’s the latest news about college students from Medina County.

Baldwin Wallace University: Taylor Prechtel of Valley City was inducted into Baldwin Wallace University’s Upsilon of Ohio chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, in the spring 2024 semester.

Prechtel, a criminal justice and sociology major, shared the honor with eight other students.

Emily Adams of Medina and Emily Johnson of Brunswick were inducted into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, at Baldwin Wallace University in the spring 2024 semester.

Adams is a graduate of Medina High School majoring in psychology. Johnson is a graduate of Ohio Connections Academy majoring in psychology.

Society membership is extended to psychology majors and minors with second semester sophomore status who have completed at least nine semester hours of psychology courses, have a minimum 3.4 GPA overall and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in psychology courses.

Brady Cancian of Brunswick and Rayna Burlison of Medina were inducted into Baldwin Wallace University’s Alpha Mu Zeta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society in the spring 2024 semester.

Cancian is a graduate of Brunswick High School majoring in adolescent and young adult education and English integrated language arts. Burlison is a graduate of Buckeye Senior High School majoring in theatre acting and directing.

Several local students stand among a distinguished group of students at Baldwin Wallace University that has reached BW’s pinnacle of academic achievement with induction into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society.

The following students were honored with membership, which is achieved by less than 4 percent of the undergraduate student body:

Julia Grady of Medina, a graduate of Buckeye Senior High School majoring in instrumental performance and music composition; Zachary Pietrasz of Medina, a graduate of Medina High School majoring in physics and applied mathematics; Gabi Ilg of Medina, a graduate of Medina Senior High School majoring in music theatre; Dana Rabung of Medina, a graduate of Medina High School majoring in software engineering; Caleb Blazek of Brunswick, a graduate of Brunswick High School majoring in biology and pre-allied health/pre-physical therapy; Chloe Sperry of Brunswick, a graduate of Brunswick High School majoring in mathematics; Emma Mascia of Brunswick, a graduate of Brunswick High School majoring in neuroscience; Hayden Kissoon of Valley City, a graduate of Buckeye Senior High School majoring in accounting; Melanie Mavroidis of Hinckley, a graduate of Highland High School majoring in neuroscience; Taylor Prechtel of Valley City, a criminal justice and sociology major; and Molly Cancian of Brunswick, an English major.

Members are selected for consistently maintaining superior academic work. Students inducted into the society each year represent the top 100 students by grade point average who have earned a minimum of 70 semester hours with at least 32 semester hours at BW.

Ohio Wesleyan University: Kathy Habian of Medina has been awarded a spring 2024 Theory-to-Practice Grant from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Part of the OWU Connection, the competitive, university-funded grants support research, internship, service and cultural-immersion opportunities.

Habian will complete a project titled “Exploring Entrepreneurial Endeavors in Catania, Sicily,” with Destiny Coleman, M.S., administrative director of The Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship.

They will travel to Italy with a larger group.

Habian also was inducted this spring into the Mortar Board national honor society at Ohio Wesleyan University. Mortar Board recognizes students with senior standing for exemplary scholarship, leadership and service.

Ohio Dominican University: Michael McFadden of Brunswick graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Ohio Dominican University May 4.

McFadden is among 154 students who earned their degree following the spring 2024 semester.

Biola University: Maria Kim of Medina graduated from Biola University in La Mirada, Calif., this week. Kim is one of 1,118 students walking the stage to commemorate their journey as an Eagle at Biola’s spring commencement.

Belmont University: Logan Bandi of Brunswick was named among the students who qualified for Belmont University’s spring 2024 dean’s list.

Approximately 44 percent of the University’s 7,338 undergraduate students qualified.
