CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jack Rugan hadn’t touched an instrument in months, but he knew a big anniversary was on the horizon and he needed to do something about it. So he sat down at his piano and then he picked up his guitar and, like nothing, out came a song.
Then another and another…
“I thought to myself, ‘I have a show coming up so maybe I’ll do an album,” says Rugan, the leader of one of Cleveland’s most prolific bands, Saul Glennon. “Once I get started I can’t stop writing songs.”
Since forming in 1994, Rugan has churned out between 1,500 and 2,000 rock ditties that recall mod pop style of the Who and Creation. Within two weeks of sitting down at the piano he had 14.
Roll out album No. 10, “North on Broadway” – just in time for Saul Glennon’s 25th anniversary show at 9 p.m. Saturday at Yorktown Lanes, 6218 Pearl Road, Parma. Also on the bill are Cleveland rockers Rumbling Spires.
“I promised myself a while back that I would release two albums a year,” says Rugan. “But this one came so easily because of its theme. It taps into my memories growing up in the Broadway and East 55th neighborhood and the songs all flowed out.”
Saul Glennon, named after a couple of Beatles-style characters in a Batman comic book, also features guitarist Rick Christianson, bassist Mike Pella, drummer Chris Kocka and guitarist-keyboardist Mark Meluch.
