CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Cavaliers player Delonte West, who has fallen on hard times, is getting an assist from Mark Cuban.
The Dallas Mavericks owner and “Shark Tank” star picked up West from a Dallas gas station Monday, Cuban confirmed to ESPN. TMZ reported Cuban drove West, who is apparently homeless, to a hotel while the former basketball player’s family figured out the next steps. The family reportedly wanted West to check into a drug rehabilitation facility and Cuban offered to pay for his treatment.
On Tuesday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported West indeed entered rehab in Florida after a reunion with his mother.
Last week, a photo of West standing along the side of the road with a sign asking for money went viral. TMZ reported at the time West’s former coach Doc Rivers and former teammate Jameer Nelson have been trying to help West for months.
In January, West, who played for the Cavs from 2008-10, was seen in videos getting beat up on the street in the Washington D.C. area and then yelling about it to police while handcuffed.
In 2015, West told the Washington Post he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was with the Cavaliers. In an interview with cleveland.com, West revealed he also battled depression and credited former teammate LeBron James with helping him get through some of those dark times.
West last played in the NBA in 2012 as a member of the Mavericks.
