CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the year “1984″ with an exhibit opening on Monday, July 29.

The year 1984 was a pivotal and massive year in pop music. Among Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The USA,” Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and Van Halen’s “1984. The Rock Hall’s 1984 exhibit will highlight big moments from the year through an immersive wall collage and carefully selected artifacts, including the jacket Lionel Richie wore during the 1984 Olympic closing ceremony in Los Angeles and one of Madonna’s stage outfits from her “Girlie Show” world tour.

1984 was also the year MTV, still proudly “Music Television,” went nationwide, and soon-to-be superstar pop artists, including Duran Duran, Eurythmics, and Cyndi Lauper, quickly adapted and used the channel and its debut and taste-making Video Music Awards to become arena-filling pop stars. Among the classic records released in 1984 were Bob Geldof’s all-star Band Aid charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” Run D.M.C.’s debut album, the Footloose Soundtrack, and The Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” and The Pretenders “Learning To Crawl” were all released in 1984.
