Bomba Tacos & Rum: Northeast Ohio's best weekend brunches, breakfasts

AKRON, Ohio - Our brunch and breakfast series continues as we check out Bomba Tacos & Rum. Here's a look at what to expect:

Location + hours: 3900 Medina Road, Akron, 234-466-7180. The restaurant is in Montrose Center at the southwest corner of Medina Road and S. Cleveland-Massillon Road. Large shared parking lot. Brunch hours: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

About the place: Sometimes you want to spice up things a bit. And while Bomba usually is thought of for tacos and rum and nighttime fare and flair, brunch has some zesty offerings. It's on a busy commercial stretch of Ohio 18 (where Medina Road turns into W. Market Street) in Akron, not far from Interstate 77. It's close to a lot of shopping, Regal Cinemas, big-box stores and a lot of other retail. Bomba also has locations in Rocky River and Beachwood.

About the food: The menu is small. There's a trio of brunch tacos; the scrambled egg and bacon includes shredded cabbage and soft taco with an especially tasty smoky aioli sauce and pico de gallo. One of the sides looks intriguing: Sweet potato plaintain hash.

About the drinks: Bloody Marys are offered, of course, and the Bomba Mimosa comes with traditional fixings or with pomegranate-ginger. Tropical Mango Sangria, rum punch and other island sippers are available. Non-alcoholic mojitos and housemade juice drinks also are on the menu. Coffee comes from Solstice, a local roastery, and is blended for Bomba.

Don't miss: Huevos Rancheros. A nice-sized platter of stacked corn tortillas with black beans, pico de gallo, cheese and cilantro. It's heated up a few notches with pickled jalapenos and fire-roasted salsa.
