Harold Camping doesn't deserve the insults

I read with interest the appraisal of Family Radio and Harold Camping by the Rev. Kenneth W. Chalker (Messages of faith, July 9). I have always enjoyed the programming of our local Family Radio station (1150 AM) -- the family-oriented snippets, the traditional hymns, and the like. I also was a bit surprised at the recent predictions by Camping and how these predictions were interwoven into Family Radio's programming -- even the children's programs. However, Chalker goes way too far in his insults to this admittedly misguided man (at least in this particular prediction).

Chalker is also correct that the news media are always after a sensational story and seem to love criticizing the Christian community. But, ironically, Chalker is performing the exact same function that he berates the media for -- demonizing Camping and Family Radio, who have an effective ministry and do much good. Apparently the Family Radio bunch are not sufficiently erudite for Rev. Chalker.

Camping recently suffered a stroke and is now recovering. He deserves better than the over-the-top salvos that Chalker fired in his article.
