Abortion is not a solution to women’s oppression. It is a symptom of it.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s promotion of abortion (“On the anniversary of the fall of Roe, Democrats blame Trump,” June 25) is evidence of how deeply ingrained the roots of sexism are in our culture. What kind of choices are pregnant women presented with?

Women with an unplanned pregnancy face the dilemma of altering their life plans if they choose to raise their children, or violently destroying their unborn children. If they choose abortion, they are simply mimicking men who do not have to deal with an unplanned pregnancy.

We must educate women about alternatives to abortion that they are often unaware of. There are free, life-affirming resources and support available at pregnancy care centers in our communities, such as Womankind, and on Feminists for Life’s help site womendeservebetter.com, so no woman feels she has to make that awful choice.

When women choose abortion, we have not established justice. We have simply adopted the standards of our oppressors and fashioned ourselves in their image. Abortion is not a solution to women’s oppression, it is a symptom of it. Refuse to choose! Women deserve better than abortion.
