Biden needs to step aside and throw nomination to an open Democratic convention

I was shocked and dismayed at President Joe Biden’s performance at Thursday’s debate. From the moment he walked onto the stage and for a full 90 minutes, he looked and acted like the doddering old man of the Republican caricature. This performance may well have lost the election for him. One shudders at the prospects for a second debate.

For that reason, and for the sake of the country, I urge Biden to follow the example of Lyndon Baines Johnson and announce that he won’t seek a second term. Throw the nomination to an open convention. Wouldn’t that be a refreshing change?

There’s no dishonor in admitting you’re no longer up to the task. There are plenty of younger candidates waiting in the wings. Besides Vice President Kamala Harris, we have U.S. Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter of California, and the one person Trump truly fears -- Michelle Obama. So, Joe, do the noble thing, and drop out of the race.
