Childish Gambino Bando Stone

"Bando Stone & the New World," what's said to be the final album from Childish Gambino (aka actor Donald Glover) comes out on Friday, July 19 (Courtesy RCA Records)RCA Records

What is said to be the final album from Donald Glover’s Childish Gambino leads this week’s new music releases, joined by projects from Deep Purple, deadmau5, Al Di Meola, Stray Kids, BTS’ Jimin and more (all subject to change)...

Album of the Week: Childish Gambino, “Bando Stone & the New World” (mcDJ Recordings/RCA): Actor Donald Glover dons his rapper alter ego for what he says will be one final time with this soundtrack to the film of the same name. It follows that “Atavista” reissue project by two months and has been preceded by the singles, “Lithonia” and “In the Night,” the latter with Jorja Smith and Amaarae. Glover begins a Childish tour August 11 and plays August 15 in Columbus.

Beachwood Sparks, “Across the River of Stars” (Curation): The Los Angeles alt.country group makes a welcome return with its first new studio album in 12 years, and fourth release overall.

deadmau5, “some ep” (mau5trap): The Ontario DJ/producer’s latest gambit is a three-song EP, which includes material under Joel Zimmerman’s main alias as well as another of his alter egos, Testpilot.

Deep Purple, “=1″ (earMUSIC): The British hard rock favorites are still smokin’ -- on the water and otherwise -- on their 23rd studio album, marking the debut of the Mk. IX lineup with new guitarist Simon McBride replacing Steve Morse.

Al Di Meola, “Twentyfour” (earMUSIC): The famed jazz and fusion guitarist began his latest release as a straightforward acoustic set during the pandemic. It’s since blossomed into something more ambitious and intricate but still centered around its creator’s virtuosity.

Flat Black, “Dark Side of the Brain” (Fearless): Wondering what Jason Hook’s been up to since he left Five Finger Death Punch? Check out this debut set from the new band he formed last year, 14 tracks with a guest appearance from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor on “Nothing to Some.”

“One Way”/”Save My Life,” Michael Hutchence (Boss Sonics/Deko): A pair of unreleased tracks from the late INXS frontman brought to life by producer, collaborator and good friend Danny Saber, who’s reportedly working on more for Hutchence’s vaults.

Jimin, “Muse” (BigHit Music): The parade of solo releases from K-pop juggernaut BTS continues, this one from vocalist Jimin -- his second album on his own, a seven-song set that “documents his journey to find the source of his inspiration.”

Stray Kids, “ATE” (JYP/Republic): An eight-track EP from the South Korean boy band octet, timed to its upcoming August 2 performance at Lollapalooza.

Koe Wetzel, “9 Lives” (Columbia): The Texas country “outlaw” is a touch less rowdy on his fifth studio album, written with collaborators such as Josh Serrato, Carrie K, and X Ambassadors’ Sam Harris.
