Highland schools news: Commended Students, Sharon spelling bee, girls basketball coach, college-bound athletes

MEDINA, Ohio - Nine Highland High School juniors have met the requirements to enter the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

They are among the 50,000 highest-scoring students nationwide and have been recognized as Commended Students.

Semifinalists will be announced in September and finalists in the spring of 2017.

This is the highest number of qualifiers in Highland history. The honorees include Shelby Daniels, Whitney Kim, Jared Kolecki, Kelly Meaden, Adrienne Meek, Alaina Monroe, Georgia Van Fossen, Braden Webb and Christopher Wright.

Sharon Elementary School host third-grade spelling bee

Each third-grade classroom at Sharon Elementary School held a spelling pre-test, with five finalists from each class moving on the take part in the school's spelling bee May 25.

The top three spellers were Luke Butcher, Audrey Stika and Alexa Bird. The rest of the finalists were Alyssa Prucha, Riley Beyer, AJ Wiseman, Johnny Pavlock, Kylee Studd, Aleena VanKirk, Walker Kraus, Zachary Butcher, Behlen Waugh, Natalie Gizzo, Kendall Stiles and Jonathan Fuhry.

Gopp named new girls basketball coach

Andy Gopp has been chosen as the new head coach of the girls varsity basketball team. He will be officially hired at the Board of Education's June 20 meeting.

Gopp has more than 11 years of coaching experience, including this past year as coach of the Highland girls JV team. Previously, he served a two-year stint as head coach of Highland's girls eighth-grade team.

From 2010-2012, he helped lead the Highland girls varsity soccer team as an assistant coach.

Gopp has taught mathematics at Highland Middle School for the past eight years.

Highland athletes embark on collegiate careers

A number of Highland High School student athletes recently committed to attend and play sports for their chosen college or university this fall. They were honored at a ceremony at the high school May 16.

They are:
