5 years ago today, snowstorm paralyzed downtown Cleveland with gridlock (photos, video)

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Today, temperatures hit 50, and the roads are clear and dry. But exactly five years ago, lake-effect snow slammed Cleveland, causing gridlock on downtown streets and routes to highways out of town.

With the streets jammed with cars, snowplows were useless.

One driver said it took an hour to travel 21/2 blocks downtown.

Desperate drivers gave up on their cars and took to the Rapid. Others sat cocooned in their cars, when commutes that normally took 20 minutes stretched to four hours.

Drivers crept into intersections without room to get through it and to the other side, thus walling off any chance of drivers to come through on a cross-street. Traffic came to a standstill.

Do you remember that commute?

The Cavs game was affected. Some players had not arrived at The Q less than an hour before tip-off, and the upper rows of the arena were empty.

At Playhouse Square, the State Theatre had a sold-out performance of "Billy Elliot the Musical," but only 716 people out of 3,000 showed up for the show.

Take a look at the dispatches from the roads on that night.
