Beards are in: See wacky, famous facial hair (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Movember is over, but facial hair isn't going anywhere, for now.

Beards are as popular now as they were in the 1970s, said Eric Zatchok, president of the Cleveland chapter of Beards of the Old Northwest.

"For years, it was popular to be clean-shaven, except for on the heavy metal and punk scene in the 1980s and '70s," Zatchok said. "Now, pop stars and actors are embracing facial hair in their roles and everyday life."

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan made headlines after he posted a pic of his newly grown stubble Monday on Instagram. Ryan is the first U.S. House Speaker in 90 years to have a beard.

According to Zatchok, early kings and dignitaries, and American presidents wore beards. For the modern man, a beard is a form of expression.

"Ladies can express themselves by changing their hairstyles," Zatchok said. "Men, we change up our facial hair."

Tjay Griffin, a consultant at The Art of Shaving in Beachwood, said more men are coming in for tips on how to take care of their beards, which should get daily maintenance.

Griffin recommends facial wash, moisturizer, oil, wax, a comb and brush to keep your facial mane tame.
