House fire in Garfield Heights claims life of man, 68

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A house fire claimed the life of a man early Tuesday morning despite efforts by police and firefighters to rescue him.

According to Garfield Heights police, officers responded to the house at 9620 Garfield Blvd. at about 1:25 a.m. and were told there was a unresponsive man upstairs.

Police officers tried to get to the 68-year-old man but were forced back because of heavy smoke. Firefighters arrived moments later and were able to carry the man out.

The male was taken to Marymount Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man is not being released pending notification of family members. The fire remains under investigation.
