John Carroll University employee accused in museum jewel heist pleads not guilty (video)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A judge set a $5,000 bond for a John Carroll University employee arrested in a jewel heist at a Cleveland museum that involved more than $80,000 in sapphires.

Hans T. Wrage, 36, entered a not guilty plea during his first court appearance before Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey Carr.

Wrage faces a fourth-degree felony grand theft charge in the Dec. 3 theft of seven sapphires Cleveland Museum of Natural History Museum. His case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Carr ordered Wrage to stay away from the museum as a condition of his bond.

Wrage, who lives in Cleveland Heights, smashed a showcase window in the museum's mineral collection and stole seven sapphires, police said. Cleveland police spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia said on Monday that the gems have not been recovered.

Wrage, a teaching and research support technician in John Carroll University's physics department, was arrested on Friday at the university. Wrage's attorney said his client has no criminal history.

The department chair told a cleveland.com reporter that members of the department were shocked by the allegations.

Wrage was placed on administrative leave while the university investigates.
